Lessons from the Road

I never do these "linky" things because, lets be honest, I am a) less than tech savvy  and b)not the best at keeping up with this space.  But this actually came on the heels of reflective weekend for this momma so here goes...

I jumped on 385 Friday afternoon and immediately felt a welcomed exhale.  This was a familiar drive.  One of my favorites actually.  Seeing the first glimpse of the Blue Ridge over the toll road has made me feel like home for years now.  It's not home, but it was at one time and it is a sweet reminder of a different season.  A season where I met my husband, where friendships grew and hard lessons were learned.  Looking back it was a carefree season, though I would have protested greatly if you had tried to tell me that then.  Sure it was filled with its struggles and heartaches and ridiculously early mornings, but it was also full of freedom and opportunity.  As I drove in a quiet car with no car seat and no Elmo song in my head I tried to remember how to function as "me".  Not just mom or wife or keeper of the house.  While I am all of those things, and incredibly thankful to be them, it almost felt foreign to just be me.  The time and energy and struggle that goes into the mom and wife role is incredible.  It should be.  I believe it is the greatest thing I will ever do.  These things are lasting.  You are making eternal investments. We are called to do it well.  It is a joy and a fight all at the same time.  So to just be "you" - without planning meals, or watching receipts or refereeing at the park, feels like it has to be relearned.  Did I really used to just jump in and out of the car with just a purse on my shoulder? I can plan a lunch date right in the middle of nap time?  For the first 30 minutes I beat myself up for feeling excited about the free weekend, for a long shower and uninterrupted meals.  But maybe a break is part of doing it well.  I heard my mom's voice reminding me "this time is good, it makes you a better mother, its okay to relax".  If you know my mom she is hands down the best mother in the world.  Her "patience bucket" as she used to call it is actually unending (even though she used to tell us it sometimes had a hole in it).  She is purposeful and diligent and giving.  So if she said its okay, it must be okay.  And the reality is, its more than okay, its good.  Its vital.  I started thinking about how I would describe myself outside of my roles as wife and mom.  That girl was who my husband fell in love with.  That girl is who the Lord chose to be Emerson's mother. It's important to not forget her.  Each new role refines and changes us.  I would like to think I am learning from every experience and allowing the Lord to mold me.  And I am so thankful for that.  I hope and pray that I am not the same person 10 years from now.  Growth is good.  But at the same time being "you" is good too.  Taking time to remember what that feels like is good.  Its good for you, good for your husband, and good for your children.  So go enjoy a day, a night, or even a weekend.  Come back recharged and renewed and ready to love on your family.  And don't have an ounce of guilt about it.  There will be plenty of puffs to eat and books to read when you get home.  :)

"Hallalulah"

Emerson has been walking around "hallalulah"ing for the past few weeks.  I was also enlightened to the fact that the last supper consisted of coffee and chick-fil-a.  Wow, nothing like your child exposing you. She also exhibited my level of patience while waiting for the neighborhood egg hunt to begin.  She saw the eggs and she was off, emptying them of their "prizes" and tossing the remains behind.  I think its safe to say she enjoyed her second Easter.  If you came in contact with her that week you would have heard "He is risen" or  "nice to meet cha".  Those were her go to phrases.  Thankfully the response to Easter being about rabbits was short lived.  Thank you Target. And here we go, picture over load...

FIVE.

Five years ago we were doing a little of this.....

So thankful for this man and for all of our family and friends who have been a shoulder to cry on, a swift kick in the rear, or an open hand during this crazy year.  Wish we could be celebrating with all of you all over again.  Here's to a hundred more.

18 Months!

Well, really more like 19 but we just had our doctors appointment. So I'm late, but at least I'm consistent :)  You definitely know what goes on there and immediately start saying "bye-bye" as soon as we are in the exam room.  You were not a fan of having your head measured but did pretty well while Dr. Traynham was listening to your heart.  You even managed a "Go Tigers" as he left.  Lolli got to go with us.  You enjoyed the extra snuggle time and I enjoyed her extra pair of hands.  You were 33.25 in. 84.71% and 24lbs 65%.
Which is so funny to me because we still think you are such a peanut.

We decided we are going to start calling you "QC".  Quality control.  You are hysterical.  You are quick to point out a mess and then ask for a paper towel to clean it up.  You LOVE to use the wipe to clean the cart at Target.  It gets us through most of the shopping trip.  You are also quick to notice a change.  We left the house without the paci you like so I fished one out of my purse that I had in a ziplock for emergencies.  You popped it right back out of your mouth and inspected it as if to say "can't fool me mom".  You eventually decided it was an adequate replacement but not without much consideration.

You are loving the new CDs you got for Christmas.  You go crazy dancing in your car seat and actually keep the beat pretty well.  I love that you enjoy music so much.  You have discovered hummus and its a great camouflage for foods that you don't want to eat.  Cover it in hummus or "sauce" (applesauce) and you will eat it.  Knock on wood your appetite is great and you are still loving your crib.  You know when you have had enough and ask for your nap or night night.  You know your limits and you love your sleep.  Unfortunately you also love to exercise your new vocabulary word. "No"  You say it in a coy, "whatcha going to do about this mama" kind of voice.  Which normally results in me trying not to laugh in order to discipline you.  We are trying to get you to say "no, please" or "no thank you".  You are stringing a lot more words together recently.  Adding adjectives to things like "pink ball" or "big mess".  My favorite this month was the "new house" I heard from the backseat when we drove in the drive way to check on the progress.  You are such a joy.  You are a passionate little thing and we love your spunk.  You are one sweet girl.

Dear Old Clemson...

Before all of the Christmas festivities began we headed to my favorite place to watch my sister become a Clemson alumni.  E was a trooper for the 4 hour drive and a little chickfila pit stop made her a happy traveler.  Seriously what did people do on long road trips before grilled nuggets and fruit? We did the hotel thing for the night and may not be doing it again for a long long time :) E thought it was party time.  Her parents however felt otherwise.  We headed to campus the next morning and even it the rain and cold it is hands down one of the best places to be.  We were so excited to celebrate with Caroline.  To say I am proud of her is an understatement.  She is one hardworking, smart, funny, and compassionate person.  So thankful I get to be her sister. Now to convince her to move to Charleston...

There she goes!

This is what was happening in the background...operation keep her quiet

"Mo Lights"

"Mo Lights, Mo Santa, Mo Jesus"....That's our 18 month old's way of requesting more Christmas.  We heard this phrase repeatedly from the backseat as we would pass by decorated houses, nativities, and lights. We may need to work on the order of those requests but she kept us laughing through all of our travels.  We would think she was asleep and then hear "ohhhhh" from the back as we passed by something she liked.  I'll say it again, Christmas with kids is wonderful. Tiring. But wonderful.  It brings back so much of the joy we quickly lose with all of the hustling around and endless lists.  We spent Christmas with the Hostetler's and then headed to Columbia for the back half of the week.  I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.
